Layout Field Technician - in Manassas, Virginia

Layout Field Technician for large scale, fast paced, high tech construction project. Responsibilities include layout and as-built locations of extensive underground utility network, structural Qa/Qc, building layout, and precision control network using Leica Total stations and building levels. Project duration expected to be from 6-24 months.




  • Operate Trimble robotic total stations (S7 with TSC3 controller running Trimble Access software)
  • 5+ years' experience as an Instrument Operator or Party Chief
  • Experience working in the field as an Instrument Operator or Party Chief (will be expected to work 8-10 hours per day, 5-6 days per week in and around excavations and equipment)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic computer skills including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Windows Explorer
  • Can read and interpret plans and specifications
  • Must possess a "can do" attitude. You will be providing a service to our clients and will be expected to work quickly and move from task to task in short notice while maintaining a commitment to our "Safety Culture"


- Pluses:

  • Familiarity with Leica total stations and FARO scanners
  • Experience in heavy construction
  • Civil 3D/Autocad





-Essential Physical Functions:


  • Standing/Walking - constant
  • Must be able to climb ladders/stairs, walk on uneven surfaces - moderate/constant most days
  • Hands/Arms - Constant use of hands/fingers for equipment
  • Sight - Visual acuity in near, mid and far range vision. Color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, hand/eye coordination.
  • Hearing: sufficient to hear conversational levels in person and over the telephone and radio; sufficient to hear alarms on equipment.
  • Speech sufficient to make oneself heard in person, speak in front of groups, and be understood over the telephone and radio.
  • Lift/Carry - 50 lbs. gear including instrument, tri-pod, hub/lath bag, sledge hammer, prism pole, vest with hand tools
  • Bending/Twisting - moderate to constant most days
  • Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling -moderate to constant most days



-Essential Mental Functions:

  • Constant mental alertness, accuracy, and attention to detail required.
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and follow through on all assignments.
  • Must use creativity, independent judgment, and organizational and problem solving skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work
  • Must possess strong mathematical skills, calculate proper dimensions of components, read/write/speak English, read blue prints, manuals, and communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and sub-contractors.
